Houjicha is made from first flush green tea that is roasted at high heat until the tea leaves turn brown. It is through this process that the tea leaves develop coffee, caramel and chocolate flavours. This roasted tencha is then milled into a fine brown houjicha powder.
With a lower caffeine content than matcha, houjicha is ideal for people who are sensitive to caffeine or for people seeking to reduce caffeine intake. It can make for a great late afternoon or evening drink.
